     1867, Rocktown.


This little place, which contained two to three hundred shanties, situated o­n the southern limits of Nashville, bordering o­n St. Cloud's hill and the Franklin turnpike, was becoming notrious, as the Republican Banner put it, "for the frequent indulgence by its inhabitants in pugilistic warfare. Just the day before (July 31) "Viney Overton...had a quarrel with a colored sister, and, as she said, got her dander up and 'went for her,' inflicitng several scratches o­n the nect of her sable antagonist, for which Esqr. Wilkinson fined the gentle Viney five dollars. About twenty witnesses appeared in this case and the court room was filled to overflowing with colored residents of Rocktown."
